We built a database by using GIS.The database comprises ground condition indices (GCIs) and damage of houses caused by 1993 Kushiro-oki Earthquake on the coastal terraces which have been artificially transformed in the east of Kushiro city. We derived some GCIs in terms of land forms and their transformation. According to the analysis of the GCI-damage database, we clarified the relationship between some GCIs and damage of houses. For example, the result of a discriminant analysis shows that the depth of the artificial fill and the gradient of the former land form under the fill sharply influence the damage of houses.We examined the relationship between the locations of damaged houses and the topographical ground condition, on the Alluvial lowland in Kushiro. The sites of damaged houses were closely related to the location of buried river channels.We introduced a development procedure of GIS for port and harbor facilities at Kobe port. To investigate the failure mechanism of quay walls during 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake, we conducted site investigations, large scale under water shaking table tests and numerical simulations. During these analyzes, the importance of relation between natural geological profile and man made reclaimed profile around the failured quay wall.
