研究課題について、寺院・神社・博物館・教育委員会等の保有する地蔵関係の絵画資料を調査し、写真撮影をおこなった。頭上に雲上円相を伴う独尊地蔵来迎図についてが研究課題ではあるが、比較のため広く地蔵の絵画作例に目を向けて、その図像的根拠と思想的背景を関連させながら、地蔵来迎図の成立と展開を考察しようと試みた。特に、従来漠然と指摘される春日信仰との関連性のほか八幡信仰との関連性を視野に入れつつ、具体的な絵画作例の中に地蔵信仰の包容力を探ろうと努めたが、雲上円相の図像的根拠や思想的背景については、必ずしも明確な成果を得たわけではない。雲上円相は普通、岡山棒沢寺本のように金色で表現され、春日社第三殿(天児屋根命)の本地仏と考えられている。大阪延命寺本のように、捕筆ながら上部に春日宮曼茶羅と同様、春日山の表現のみられる作例もある。一方、大阪誉田八幡宮本は本図を僧形八幡と伝え、八幡信仰の影響を思わせる。八幡神の頭上円相は普通、京都神護寺本のように朱色で表現される日輪であるが、日輪観・月輪観と鏡の複雑な関係もあり、地蔵来迎図の雲上円相の思想背景は教義の上からは容易に明確にしがたい。制作年代の問題はあるが、春日信仰を背景とした京都高山寺本僧形八幡御影曼茶羅などの作例も重要な位置を占めるものと思われ、さらに大阪壺井八幡宮の僧形八幡神彫像の胎内に納められた千体地蔵菩薩像などのように、地蔵・春日・八幡の関係は一様には把握しがたい。これらの問題点の細かな考察は、不十分ながら、この調査での知見をもとに今後の検討課題としたい。
