本研究によって明らかになった最も重要な点は、1980年代におけるビデオ産業の隆盛とミニシアターブームが日本の映画館のありようを劇的に変化(衰退)させて来たということである。この時代以降、盛り場における「シンボル」としての映画館の存在感はどんどんと低下していくことになる。従って、現代日本人に「映画館体験」に関するアンケート調査を試みても、映画館はどこかノスタルジックな雰囲気を持った場所としてのみ回顧されてしまう。また、名画坐社長へのインタビューは、この変容において大資本が果たした役割を明らかにしてくれた。つまり、それまでの映画館が制作会社(東宝・松竹・・)の系列館か、そこから一定の自立性を保った名画坐のどちらかだったのだが、1980年代になると西武・東急といったデパートの大資本がこの映画館経営に参入してきて、「ミニシアター」ブームを巻き起こしたわけである。また、レンタルビデオの隆盛は安い料金で映画を見ることを可能にした。こうして自立的上映者としての「名画坐」は経営が不可能になり、激減することになる。これが、1980年代以降、映画館に起きた変容である。この変容の過程において、観客たちが映画を見る経験はどのように変化したのだろうか。その変化の前触れとして私は、「ロッキー・ホラ-・ショー」というカルトム-ビ-の観客たちの独特のパフォーマンスに注目した。この映画の観客たちは、ただ受動的に映画作品を変容する聴衆ではなく、作品と同じコスチュームを纏い、スクリーンの前で同じ演技をしてみせ、観客全員でスクリーンに向けてセリフを叫んだり一緒に歌ったりしてみせる極めて能動的なパフォーマ-なのである。しかし、この能動的観客は奇妙なことに、予見不可能な他者の世界に自分を開いていくのではなく、自分に親しい予定調和的世界の中へ閉じ篭もっていくナルシシスティックな受動的観客とも言えるのではないか。これを私はソンタグの「キャンプ」概念を援用することで論じた。
