本研究では、まず、1983年から3年間にわたって社団法人日本計量協会が行った「計量に関する歴史資料の調査研究」の報告書をもとに、日本全国に散在している近世における量制関係の歴史資料の所在確認を行った。さらに、これに加え、全国の博物館・文書館・資料館・個人などに対して文書による照合を行って、近世の計量器ならびに文書資料(史料)の有無を確認した。その結果、所蔵者単位にして約120機関・個人、資料単位にして約5900件(うち計量器約300件、史料約5600件)の情報を収集することができた。また、量制に関する研究文献情報の収集をも進め、国内外の研究者の強力により、日本・韓国・中国・台湾・アメリカ・フランス・ドイツ・ハンガリー・ロシアなどを中心に、約1000件の文献情報を得た。これら集積した情報は、データベース化を継続して行っている。次に、前述の史料所在情報に基づいて、主要史料の調査を行った。とくに、京都市歴史史料館では京都枡座福井家の史料(国指定重要文化財)約5000点を所蔵しており、その量・内容ともに他に類例を見ず、本研究においても集中的に調査した。調査に際しては、御用留類を熟覧して、主要部分の写真撮影も行った。その他の機関・個人所蔵の資料も含め、合計で、計量器約50件、史料約120件を写真で収集した。これらの史料の分析の結果、近世に江戸幕府が設置した江戸と京都の枡座以外にも、水戸藩・越後高田藩・岡山藩・仙台藩・佐賀藩などが独自の枡座(枡屋)を有することが判明し、また、江戸の枡座は上州高崎に販売所を設置していたことも判明した。さらに、幕府の公定枡以外にも、美濃地方の弥惣枡など庶民の生活に密着した枡の存在を掘り起こすことができた。

This study was carried out in the three years from 1983 to 1983 by the Japan Metrology Association, a corporate body, to confirm the location of historical data on measurement relationships scattered throughout Japan. The results of historical data analysis show that in modern times, Edo shogunate was set up outside Edo and Kyoto, Mizudo Domain, Echigo Takata Domain, Okayama Domain, Sendai Domain, Ojima Domain, and Edo shogunate was set up outside Uesu Takasaki. In addition to the government's decision, the existence of the people's life in Mino has been closely observed.
