本研究は、『神道集』所収話やお伽草子・古浄瑠璃の本地物における神話的機能の考察を端緒として、縁起伝承の神話的機能について検討し、本地物形式をとらない縁起伝承をも視野に含めて、「中世神話論」の再構築を試みようとするものであった。従来の「中世神話論」の問題点の整理や形式・モティーフによる本地物の分類等の基礎的作業と併行して、『神道集』所収話を中心に縁起伝承の神話的機能について考察することに大半の時間を費やした。その結果、得られた成果は、大まかに次の2点にまとめることができる。1、『神道集』所収話と内容の密接に関連する在地縁起類が数多く存在することは従来より知られているが、それらの殆どは近世中期から明治初期にかけての写本であり、『神道集』所収話の在地における展開を考える上で、『神道集』成立期との時間的空隙をいかに埋めるかが大きな問題であった。本研究では近世初期の紀行文や諸記録によりこの空隙の一部を埋め、在地における展開の様相を明らかにした。2、『神道集』巻8「群馬群桃井郷上村内八カ権現事」は、その縁起内容により従来から注目されていたが、伝承の背景については十分に明らかにされていなかった。本研究では、現・常将神社が八カ権現の里宮であったのに対し、吾妻山中腹にかつて鎮座していた吾妻大権現が八カ権現の山宮に相当し、その吾妻大権現を奉祀していた湯浅氏の系図伝承より、八カ権現はこの地の豪族桃井氏が奉じた鎮守神であったことを明らかにした。(これらの成果の一部は平成8年中に刊行予定の『講座日本の伝承文学』第4巻に報告した。)他に裏面に記した成果等もあり、「中世神話論」の再構築までには至らなかったものの、それへの基盤を形成することができた。現在は、在地縁起の神話的機能に関する考察を継続的にすすめているところである。
