本研究は、『和泉式部縁起』と土佐光芳画の『三国三社権現縁起』『影現寺縁起』に焦点を絞り、唱導と関わる縁起が絵巻という形態に仕立てられる背景、即ち、製作の動機・経済的基盤・文化圏等を解明し、縁起伝承の展開について考察することを目的とするものであった。『和泉式部縁起』については、東北院蔵巻子本の調査(閲覧・撮影)は行ったが、誠心院蔵絵巻の調査は所蔵者と日程の調整がつかず叶わなかったため、今年度は『誓願寺縁起』『金玉要集』『一遍上人絵詞伝直談鈔』その他の関連資料との比較・検討など、基礎的作業を行うに止まった。一方、土佐光芳画の縁起絵巻については、『三国三社権現縁起』『影現寺縁起』の他に、大念仏寺蔵『片袖縁起』の存することをふまえて本研究に着手したが、別に『平野郷社縁起』『橘嶋庄両社縁起』の存することがわかり、この二絵巻について調査(閲覧・撮影)を行った。これら土佐光芳画の縁起絵巻は、いずれも外題・詞書が堂上貴族の手になり、製作依頼者は在地の有力者や宗教者であった。こうした土佐光芳や堂上貴族が製作に関与した地方の寺社縁起絵巻成立は、堂上歌人と地下歌人との交流(注釈や古今伝授に限らず、地方寺社への和歌奉納など)を通した文化圏の形成と連動することが判明した。依って今年度は、宮廷絵師土佐光芳・堂上貴族・地下歌人・在地有力者・在地宗教者が交渉する文化圏の中で縁起絵巻作品群が胎出したという、縁起絵巻の製作背景の輪郭を明らかにすることができた。その成果の一部については、伝承文学研究会第268回東京例会(3月29日)において口頭発表したが、今後は絵巻製作に関与した堂上貴族の動向をより詳しく調査するなど、製作背景の全体像を明らかにして、縁起伝承の史的・質的展開の中に、土佐光芳画の縁起絵巻を位置づけることを試みたい。
