日本語の「こ/そ/あ」、英語のthis/thatに見られる話し手と対象との間の距離の指標はフランス語の指示詞の場合、通常な現れない。 「この少年」も「あの少年」もフランス語ではce gaconで表現される。ただ、celui-ci/celui-la^^｀の場合、-ci/-la^^｀の対立が「近/遠」の対立に対応するため、一見したところ「こ」と「そ」もしくは「あ」の対立に相当する関係が見られるのではないかと予測され、今回はデーターベース等を駆使しその対象研究を行った。その結果、celui-ciはcelui-la^^｀に比べて、文脈指示用法における出現頻度がより高く、その場合il等のanaphoriqueな代名詞との対立で用いられることがわかった。そして、その用法を細かく観察していくと、フランス語における-ci/-la^^｀は文脈指示用法においては、常に他の対象との対比のもとに特定の対象を限定する機能をもっていることもわかる。これはフランス語の中で、de^^′ictiqueな指示がanaphoriqueな指示を補完する関係にあることを示している。対象言語学敵艦点からは、距離の指標に基づいて対立相手なしでも使用されうる日本語の「こ」「あ」とフランス語の-ci/-la^^｀は文脈指示用法では全く異なった機能を果たしていると結論づけることができ、現場指示用法における距離の指標は各国語においてかなり普遍的に観察できるものの、その指標の文脈指示用法におけるあらわれは、各国語の多様性によっていると予想されるのである。この研究成果は1996年6月の日本フランス語フランス文学会において口頭発表される。
