指示表現に関して、個別言語の違いによらない一般的な原理を追求し、それと同時にデータに基づいて日本語とフランス語の特殊性についての考察を行った。理論的枠組みとしてはメンタル・スペース理論を採用するが、用いる概念については定義を洗い直し、一貫した指示のモデルを構築することを心がけた。まず、「役割」「値」を集合モデルによって理解し、「役割」はカテゴリー、「値」を成員、カテゴリーが持つ属性を「意味」と設定する。このような枠組みの中で、固有名も成員が一つしか存在しないカテゴリーと考えるのがよく、その成員の持つ属性がカテゴリーの属性であり、固有名の意味に関してはFregeやRussellの唱えた「対象属性説」が理論上の整合性が最も高い。フランス語ではun Martinというような形態的に「不定冠詞+固有名」の形をとる名詞句があるが、対応する日本語は「マルタンさんという人」であり、対応の上からもこれらは固有名起源の普通名詞と考えるのがよく、そうすることでKripkeの指摘した「固定指示詞」的性格を固有名の普遍的性質とすることができる。固有名もカテゴリーとして他の名詞句と同様に扱うことにより、「役割」「値」の概念をすべての名詞句に適応することが可能になる。そうするとフランス語の代名詞ilとceの違いも役割と値を備えた対象を指示するilと役割もしくは値を欠いた対象を指示するceの違いとして記述できる。日本語のコ・ソ・アやフランス語のceはしばしば指さし行為と共に用いられ、demonstratifと称されているが、その本質は認知的突出性の高い(saillant)ものを指示対象として指定することにある。この共通の性質から「あのN」やce Nのもつ周知の意味効果も説明可能である。日本語のコ・ソ・アの形態素が持つ遠・近・中の意義素は、文章中では対象が存在するスペースの属性に対応する。
