有効な技術管理のためには技術変化の態様をまず明らかにする必要がある。その技術変化の態様については産業により相違があることが本研究で明らかとなった。本研究では、日本の塗料工業および製薬業における技術変化についてそれぞれ数社の詳細な事例研究をすることによって、これらの多品種ロット生産を特性とする精密科学工業における技術変化の道筋が、合衆国自動車工業を経験的基礎とした技術変化モデルや、同質製品を大量に生産する素材型化学工業における技術変化のそれと相違することが明らかになった。加工組立産業のモデルでは、産業成熟とともに製品の標準化・製法の自動化・生産の大規模化・製品革新から製法革新への重点の移行・画期的革新から漸進的革新への移行が進むとされており、素材型化学工業の研究では、加工組立産業の場合と比べて産業ライフサイクルの速い段階で同様の移行が進むとされているのに対し、精密化学工業では、こうした移行があまり進展せず、一定段階でとどまり、製品革新や画期的革新が以前と重視されつづけていた。このようなことから、産業の技術変化を考える際には、化学やバイオテクノロジーをコアとするプロセス型工業のなのか物理的加工をコアとする加工組立型工業なのかというような技術特性への配慮、小品種大ロット生産で許されるのか多品種小ロット生産が要求されるのかという市場特性への配慮、さらには製薬業のように特定の制度がいかに関わっているのかというような点への配慮が必要であることが明らかとなった。
