新潟県燕市における勤続製品流通業を巡る状況は、(1)「円高」とNIESの追い上げ、国際的不況も加わった外需の低迷、(2)「平成不況」と「市場飽和」による内需の低迷に見舞われ、依然として深刻だと言える。当産地の金属製品流通業の年次的推移を見ると、事業所数では、「バブル景気」崩壊の1991年以降顕著な減少傾向を示している。出荷額においては、1991〜1997の6年間でわずか0.5%の増加であり、従業者数は微増している。その販売先は、消費地の「百貨店関係問屋」、「量販店・スーパー関係問屋」、「業務用専門店」、「その他の専門店」に大別されるが、最近ではこれに加えて諸外国の金属製品を輸入する業者が増大している。今や産地問屋は、量販店からの要請によって、生き残り戦略として燕産地の金属製品と競合する金属製品の輸入販売を余儀なくされている。当産地の流通業は、(1)物流機能、(2)マーケッティング機能、(3)販路拡大機能、(4)情報管理機能、(5)在庫管理機能の5つの機能を有している。従来、当産地の流通業は本来メーカーが果たすべきマーケッティング機能、つまり消費者ニーズを収集し、新製品開発や新分野開拓に活かす機能を代行してきた。しかしこの間、特に高度情報化(「IT革命」への対応)と在庫管理(消費地問屋の「倉庫化」)においてその機能の顕著な変化が見られた。また産地問屋は、今や当産地以外の製品を多く扱うようになっており、「自立化」傾向を示している。

There is a tendency to "self-reliance" in the production of products other than those produced today.
