Historical Documents in European Languages Relating to Japan in the 16-18^<th> Centuries - an approach to make catalogues and data-bases.

The Historiographical Institute has been collecting unpublished historical documents concerning Japan written in foreign languages by microfilm.In this project, we aimed at the furtherance of making descriptive catalog for the documents one by one, and database of them. Besides helping researchers to use these documents more easily, the catalogues and the databases will show us the structure of the organizations which left those documents.In respect of Dutch language documents, we have got along with making a database of the documents of the Dutch East India Company preserved in Algemeen Rijksarchief in the Hague, "Batavia's Uitgaand briefboek 1621-1792 (outgoing documents from Batavia)". Now we finished dealing with the documents from 1621 to 1686, about 12,500 items.We are also making a descriptive catalog of the documents of Society of Jesus preserved in Bibliotaca Publica da Ajuda, Lisboa. The hand-written copy books named Jesuitas na Asia include many reports from Jesuits in Japan and other Asian countries in the 16-17^<th> centuries. We recorded the summary of these documents one by one.We now intend to complete these works and to begin a new structural analysis of the organizations through the documents.
