项目摘要

This is a study of basic words of American Sign Language (ASL) and an attempt to find an effective way for the Japanese beginners of ASL to locate the unknown words and identify them.About 1500 ASL words were analyzed according to the following factors : hand configuration (hand shapes, hand orientation, palm orientation, hand internal movement), the place or space where signing is conducted, and the direction or manner of hand movement.Eight hundred and eight basic words were selected from the data as the vocabulary of a dictionary or word list which beginners who have no knowledge of ASL could consult. The words were listed on Microsoft Excel and are filtered with the factors that constitute the signs. It was clearly shown that a learner (in the direct methods) who did not know the meaning a sign but remembered any of the above-mentioned factors was able to locate the right ASL word or other candidates. Some factors were more prominent than others in remembering the signs. Visual illustrations are suggested to be useful to make the consulting easier. This study is not, and is not intended to be, a formal description of an ASL vocabulary. However this trial product seems to give support to the idea that ASL words can be looked up from their constituents which learners at the beginner level can remember.
