本研究は、わが国の伝統的地域社会に存在していた青年期発達を支援する社会システムや民俗慣行の特徴と機能を、心理学的に吟味することを目的とした研究である。本年度は、次の観点からの研究を行った。研究1 「豊島と姫島における青年宿と青年期慣行の特徴と発達支援機能の比較研究」では、特に大分県姫島にかつて存在していた倶楽部や夜這いについての回想的な聞き取り調査を行うと同時に、現在も多くの住民が参加する盆踊りの観察を行った。その結果、(1)倶楽部での男女交際は、盆踊りや祭などの準備として集まった際の地区ごとの集団的な交際であるのに対して、夜這いでの交際は、地区の枠を越えて気の合う仲間と行う能動的な男女交際であった。(2)女性は、夜這いが自分の気に入った男性との交際の場となるだけでなく、気に入らない男性に対する接し方が自分に対する世間の評価につながることを心得て接していた。(3)自分らしさを表現する盆踊りでは、男型・女型の踊りをマスターした上で、いかに個性的に踊るかが目標になっていた。研究2 「答志島における青年宿と青年期慣行の特徴と発達支援機能の実際」では、三重県答志島に現存する青年宿(寝屋)やかつて存在していた娘遊びについての聞き取り調査と、御木曳祭における青年と他世代との交流の観察を行った。その結果、(1)相互浸透的な青年宿の部屋の物理的構造は、家族と青年の相互作用を高めるのに一役かっているが、青年は守るべきプライバシーの意識をもっている。(2)娘遊びは、男子青年がまず女性の親と会話をした後に女性の部屋に通される点で姫島の夜這いとは異なり、それを通して地域での年長者とかかわる術を身につけていく機能をもっていた。(3)約100日間の厳しい練習を経て行われた20年ぶりの御木曳祭では、主役となった威勢のよい青年が、地域住民に対して期待のもてる将来を提示する機能があった。
