3年間の研究の最終年度に当たる平成10年度は、昨年実施した調査結果の考察と分析を行った。有効回答者数は有配偶者が220名、配偶者のいない者72名合計292名である。(1)本人の年齢は50歳〜70歳未満が80%を占め平均年齢は64歳。(夫の平均年齢は67歳)(2)既婚子との同居率は23%と低く、同居理由は家の跡継ぎでが多く、老後の世話期待、孫の世話などの理由は少ない。(3)家庭の経済状況は「充分満足」「まあまあ良い」「基本的には足りている」を合わせて92%で、生活にゆとりのある階層といってよい。経済的に自立していることから子ども世代との経済的援助関係は薄い。(4)生活のゆとりは「国内旅行」が一位を占める趣味・社会活動の内容からも感じられる。夫の場合もほぼ同様。健康状態もまずまずで「持病があって日常生活に支障がある」は3.8%(夫は5.5%)にすぎない。退職後のまだまだ元気な時期を楽しんでいるといえよう。(5)孫との関係では乳幼児期に世話をしたのは76%で内孫の場合48.8%、外孫が70.4%で後者の世話をする場合が多いことがわかった。世話の内容で最も多かったのは娘の出産前後の世話で60%。嫁の出産の場合は14%と割合がぐっと下がる。その他は保育園の送り迎えや病気の時、子ども夫婦の都合に合わせて孫を預かるなどである。孫については責任は親にあり、祖父母には責任があるとは考えていない。孫が生まれたときは「自分の孫というより新しい生命の誕生に感動した」が48%と最も多く、次が「自分の子どもが生まれた時より嬉しかった」が22%であった。別居の孫とは「月1回位会いたい」45% 「週一回位会いたい」27% 「毎日会いたい」は1割程度であった。自由記述には、親ほど責任を持たない孫との付き合いは楽しいが、しかし責任を持てないだけにほどほどの一線もあると感じている内容が多かった。今回の回答者は、大都市に住むが自宅は持ち家で、経済的にも恵まれ、趣味にも孫との付き合いにもゆとりが感じられる階層といえるだろう。
