生成文法理論をもちいて、英語、日本語を含む諸言語の時制表現について、言語学的失語症学の立場から対照研究を行うことを目的とした。時制表現は、さまざまな言語事象のなかでも中核をなすものであり、その障害パターンの普遍性と個別性を明らかにすることは、人間言語の特徴の解明にとって大変有意義である。今年度の調査からは次のことが明らかになった。まず日本語ではHagiwara(1995)か産生と文容認性判断の調査によりIP(Inflection Phrase)内部の要素である時制TP(Tense Phrase)は保持されていること、一方、英語ではNadeau and Rothi(1992)が、フランス語ではNespoulous et al.(1984,1988,1990)がいずれも症例研究から、一致現象との対比において時制の障害を報告している。イタリア語ではMiceli,Silvery,Romani,and Caramaza(1989)が、20名の失文法患者の発話分析の結果、同様の結果を得ている。ヘブライ語でもFriedmann and Grodzinsky(1997)の症例報告では、一致現象は保たれているが、時制は失われていることが分かった。一見すると時制の保持/喪失に矛盾がみられるが、普遍文法を仮定することで統一的な説明が可能であることが分かった。それによると、(a)階層構造の上位に位置する要素が失われやすく、下位に位置する要素は保持されやすいこと、(b)階層性の喪失と障害の重症度との間には相関性がみられること、(c)神経心理学的データのみならず、脳生理学的実験からも(a)の傾向が観察された(萩原ら 1997)。最後にこれらの結果はいづれもHagiwara(1995)の経済性の仮説を支持するものであることが分かった。
