「地区データ・ベース作成用システムによる民家絵図の解析に関する研究」では、「建家取調図面帳」と題した明治10年代の民家に関する絵図資料を大量に収集した。その内訳は、農家では、和歌山県かつらぎ町で11ヵ村約900戸、京都府加茂町で3ヵ村約300戸、京都府長岡京市で1村約100戸、徳島県で1ヵ村約70戸、一方、町家では、京都市で42ヵ町約1,200戸、大阪市で22ヵ町約800戸、大津市で6ヵ町約200戸など、合計で約3,500戸の民家の平面、建物配置などに関する資料を集積した。これらの大量のデータを処理するためには、コンピュータによる「地区データベース作成用システム」を導入し、絵図資料のデータを入力するとともに、水帳、古写真、絵画、職業史料なども入力して、復元の基礎データを作成した。つぎに入力データをもとに、間取りや住宅設備の類型化、間口規模と間取り類型との関係、また建蔽率、土蔵の配置、集住形態などを解析した。すなわち、一村あるいは一町の全住戸を網羅した検討をおこない、間取りの類型、座敷飾などの内部仕様、附属屋の配置形態、町家の集合形態などを検討する。また、民家の階層性に注目し、同一村(町)において歴史的にどのような変遷を遂げるのか、また同一時期において地域的にどのような特性をもつのかを比較検討した。その結果、村方史料による農家の研究では、間取りの分析(類型化と階層性に関する研究)、座敷飾の分析(類型化と階層性に関する研究)、家屋配置、附属屋に関する分析、そして民家の階層性及び地域特性に関する比較研究が可能になった。町方史料による町家の研究では、間取りの分析(類型化と階層性の関する研究)、住宅設備、附属屋に関する分析、町家の集合形態の分析(町ごとの類型化と地域特性に関する研究)、集住形態と職住関係の検討などが可能になった。とくに連続平面図の作成に際して、原図の寸法誤差の修正がコンピュータ内で簡単に処理できるようになり、住戸密度、建蔽率や容積率が正確に計測できるようになり、現代の居住水準との比較が容易になった。これらの研究成果の一部は、「伝統的都市型住居とその近代的変容-大阪船場道修町の町家-」と題して発表した。今回の研究に用いた「地区データベース作成用システム」は、大量の絵図関係のデータ処理に比較的有効に機能した。ただ、原資料の操作に高度の専門的知識が要求されるので、精度の高いデータを得るためには、その点の改善が必要である。
