It is the purpose of this study to design a mass production process of singing sand because of the recovery of singing sand which lost "sound" by seaside pollution. Although there are many washing methods to change silica sand into singing sand, various washing experiments of silica sand-water slurry were carried out using a washing machine with a horizontally shaking motion mechanism in this study. The silica sand used was from Osodani in Iide town of Yamagata prefecture. The degree of cleanness of washed silica sand was evaluated by measuring sound pressure emmitted from the sand bed into which a glass rod was penetrated.The principle results obtained are as follows : 1.Silica and emitted singing sound by washing for a long time. 2.Washing time was reduced by the pretreatment of ultrasonication and by the addition of surfactant. 3.The optimum concentration of silica sand for washing effect existed. 4.Silica sand with the size smaller than 300mum did not emit singing sound. 5.The removed particles by washing were the fine particles of silicate mineral with the range of 0.2-100mum. 6.Washing of silica sand was promoted at higher velocity revolution of washing machine. 7.Washing mechanism was due to the shear stress between silica sand and water and to the contact interactoin between silica particles. 8.The washing machine using water stream is considered to be effective to produce singing sand.
