平成10年度の研究内容および成果を要約すると、以下のようになる。第一に、古代ギリシアにおける社会関係のうち、親族関係に関しては、ハンフリーズ教授(ミシガン大学)から依頼された自身の大著の原稿に対するコメントを兼ねて、特に初期ギリシア(ホメロス)における親族関係の分析とその後代での継続性につき、従来の学説整理と資料分析に集中した。他方、互酬性原理については、贈与と貨幣に関係という視点から分析を開始し、膨大な学説整理に着手した。第二に、スピーチの分析に関しては、ホメロスにおける動詞peitho/peithomai(説得する/信頼する)の分析を基礎に、スピーチの中には、大別して「双方が前提を共有し、それを前提にして議論する」タイプと「前提そのものを争う」タイプがあることを仮説として導出した。そして現在、この仮説を、ギリシア悲劇作品、喜劇作品、トウキュディデス等において検証中であるが、一部は既に生成10年度の西洋古典学会にて発表した。また、第一および二に関する業績はいくつか公刊した(業績欄参照)。第三に、社会関係を同定する一つの規準である法ないし法律と、弁論の関係につき、新たに研究を開始した。このテーマは、伝統的にローマ法とギリシア弁論術の関係として議論されてきたものだが、本研究で獲得された新たな視点から、根本的に再検討する必要があると痛感した。スピーチのなかで、法が他の原理(親族関係や互酬性)と同等な機能を営むのか否かにつき、現在古典資料を中心に検討中である。尚、上記ハンフリーズ教授の業績の翻訳という形でも、この問題にアプローチしている。最後に、平成11年度は本研究を継続するとともに、第三について、特定領域研究「古典学の再構築」(公募)を申請中である。
