Due to a recent tendency in which there has been an increase in the construction of structures that are easily oscillated by wind forces, a wind resistant design has become more important. Since there are many unclear points in the understanding of wind responses of inelastic structures at present, designs are made considering the conditions where structural frames will behave elastically against the maximum design wind speed. However, under the consideration of the uncertainty of external forces, it may well be that structures will be subject to wind speeds exceeding the design speed even though this chance is small. Therefore, the inelastic response characteristics of structures for wind forces need to be obtained for the investigation into their ultimate resistance strength. During the period of inelastic responses, the amount of input energy increases due to the fact that the equivalent natural vibration period of structures becomes longer. From this point of view, it can be said that the inelastic behavior of structures is disadvantageous. However, the frames absorb the plastic energy during a period of inelastic responses. Therefore, it is deduced that the stable response behavior of structures can be obtained by restricting the degree of plasticity. This study aims at clarifying the inelastic wind responses of steel structures by carrying out on-line wind response tests. The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows:(1) With regard to along-wind responses, the plastic deformation accumulated on one side of the structures due to the presence of the mean wind force. As for across-wind responses, the plastic deformation occurs on both sides.(2) The results of the response experiments correspond quite well to those obtained from the response analysis used in this study.(3) The along-wind responses can be estimated by caring out analyses using Bi-linear type restoring force characteristic models if a plastic stiffness is set up adequately.(4) The across-wind responses can not be estimated by analyses made using Bi-linear type restoring force characteristic models.
