申請者たちは、インターネットの利用方法の1つであるMUD(MultiUser Dungeon)の中で社交的に行動することが、現実場面における人々の対人不安傾向を軽減するかを検討している。昨年度の研究では、シャイネス傾向者がMUDの中で社交的に行動した後には、現実場面での他者に対する行動が積極的になり、対人不安傾向が低くなることが確認された。しかし、この実験では、被験者はMUDを30分しか使っておらず、また、現実場面での積極性がMUD使用の直後に観察されており、短期的な影響しか検討されていない。さらに、シャイネス傾向の低いヒトは被験者となっていない。そこで、本年度の実験では、被験者に合計して9時間(1日に1〜3時間)にわたってMUDを使わせ、さらに、他者に対する積極性の測定を別の日に行った。また、シャイネス傾向の日とも被験者とした。具体的にはまず、予備調査によって、シャイネス傾向が高いと判定された10名の女子大生と、それが低かった10名を、使用群と統制群に半々に分けた。使用群は、MUDの中で「社交的な人物を演じる」ように教示され、9時間、MUDの1つである「The Palace」の一部のサイトを使用した。一方、統制群の被験者は、同じ時間、中立的な映像を視聴した。これらのメディア接触の後、別の日に、待合室テクニックを使って、被験者の対人的積極性を調べた。被験者は、見ず知らずの人物(サクラ)と、2人きりにされ、その人物に対して、被験者がどれだけ積極的に行動したか(話しかけたか、など)を調べた。この結果、シャイネス傾向の低い被験者の場合で、使用群のほうが、統制群よりも、他者に対して積極的に行動するという有意な結果が得られた。このように、一応の有意な結果は得られたが、本実験は、実施に非常に時間がかかるため、被験者の数はまだ多くない。現在も、継続してデータを追加している。
