项目摘要

本研究は、3年の年月を経て一定の研究成果があったことを以下報告する。1.英文社説の理解度について、日本語母語話者にとっては、日本語を翻訳した社説と英米の社説との比較では、有意な差異は見出せなかった。日本の新聞の間では、The Daily Yomiuriがもっとも理解しやすいと判定され、次にAsahi Evening Newsが続いた。英米の新聞の間では有意差は認められなかった。また、語彙の難易度についてもこの日本の2紙がもっとも平易な語彙を使用していると判定された。2.英語母語話者に依頼した日本の英字新聞の社説の英文の評価について、The Japan Timesが他の3紙を大きく引き離して有意差を示した。同紙は元来日本語を翻訳したものではないものの、この結果からも翻訳英文の「英語らしさ」の欠如が否定できないことが伺われる。しかしながら、同紙は日本語母語話者に、他紙から比較すると分かりづらく、語彙の難度も高いと感じられているとの判定も受けている。同紙を度外した、日本で発行されている翻訳英字新聞の3紙の間だけでの英語母語話者の評価(文法性、明瞭性、自然さ、文章構成)比較では、Mainichi Daily NewsがThe Daily YomiuriとAsahi Evening Newsをいずれの基準でも大きく引き離し統計的有意差があった。3.各基準の相関性については、日本語母語話者の「英文理解度」と「語彙の難易度」の間で負の相関性があった。その他の相関性について総合的に判断すると、文法的に正しい英文は理解しやすく、自然さがあり、文章構成もしっかりしていると結論付けられる。4.英語母語話者に明瞭であると判定された社説が同時に日本語母語話者にも理解しやすい英文であるとは限らないことがわかった。例えば、The Japan Timesは英語母語話者にもっとも高い明瞭な社説であるという評価を受けているのに、日本語母語話者にはもっとも難解であるという判定をされている。5.また、実証実験で使用された英文の語数や1センテンスに含まれる語数、すなわち文の長さなどの違いは、両母語話者の判定には影響を与えなかったようである。
