A novel compound, MS-153, which has an ability to enhance glutamate uptake and inhibit glutamate release, blocked the development of behavioral sensitization to locomotion-inducing effect of methamphetamine. Further, MS-153 blocked the development of sensitization not only to locomotion-but also stereotypy-inducing effect of phencyclidine. These results indicate that methamphetamine- or phencyclidine-inducing enhancement of glutamatergic neurotransmission can play an important role for developing behavioral sensitization to methamphetamine, or phencyclidine, respectively.
