In order to contribute to the floor planning and interior design of tatami space in city dwellings in Japan, a survey was taken of the residents of the greater metropolitan areas of the national capital Tokyo, Kansai, Nagoya and Fukuoka, and the provincial city of Kumamoto, concerning the present conditions of tatami rooms, and the consciousness of the residents to them. With regard to the present conditions of the floor space of tatami rooms, noticeable regional differences could be seen; for example, there was less in the Tokyo area and more in the Kansai area. With regard to the use of tatami rooms, regional differences could be seen such as the greater use of the rooms for guests in the Kumamoto area. Also, with regard to the feelings of residents toward these rooms, differences became clear in the different areas, and with different age groups. The need for, and the feeling of attachment toward tatami could be seen to be less in the Tokyo area. However, a strong feeling of attachment could be seen in all areas.Considering "the new design of tatami space" from literature documentation, the requirements for the new design of tatami space for it to be carried on into the next generation were shown. Results of the considerations of the preferences of residents for new designs of tatami space showed people in all areas would accept new designs.From the living function perspective, the direction of tatami space in Japanese city dwellings is for guests and relaxation, and the design required is a new, modern design based on tradition.
