Study on Clothing Life Style of Tenants in Special Nursing Home for the Aged-from the Viewpoint of "Space for Life"-

For the purpose of investigation of the tenants' clothing life style in special nursing home for the aged (NH), we carried out a questionnaire survey to all institutions in Japan in 1999. 645 institutions -21.7% of all those-replied to this. And in 2000, we investigated users of a day service center (SC) for the similar purpose. The results are as follows ;1) The NH tenants' clothes are controlled by the convenience of care workers and the maintenance of cloth-mainly the ease of washing. The SC users' clothes are not controlled in the same way.2) The NH tenants' hair style is mainly close-cropped in male, short-cut in female. The SC users' is mainly short-cut in both sex.3) Almost all managers of NH have recommended for new tenants to wear "loose" clothes. Approximately half of them, to wear "front opening" one especially for disabled persons. Approximately 1/3 of them, to avoid "iron-press needed" and "laundry-service needed". As the result of those, the outlook of tenants tends to show worn-out one.4) Almost all institutions have and are using usually the big-laundry-machine and the big-drying-machine. Iron-press services are provided in merely 1/4 institutions.5) It is a few institutions to accept the participation of tenants to execute managing clothes.6) The storage spaces of clothes are not enough. More than 90% tenants of all NH live in multi-users rooms. So, they cannot manage their own clothing life.
