The Tokoro Site, which was designated as a national historic site in 1974, is located in the town of Tokoro, a town in eastern Hokkaido facing the Sea of Okhotsk and Lake Saroma. The University of Tokyo has conducted the archaeological research of the Tokoro Site and other sites in the town of Tokoro for 45 years in cooperation with the town. The town of Tokoro have established a historic park, "Tokoro Iseki-no-mori", an archaeological museum, "Tokoro Iseki-no-yakata", and the Tokoro Archaeological Operations Center to present the sites to the local residents. The University of Tokyo and the town of Tokoro are currently planning to designate additional sites to the national historic site, the Tokoro Site, for eventual presentation. The sites to be designated include the Tokoro Chashi site, which was excavated by the University of Tokyo, the Tokoro Chashi site Okhotsk locality, which is currently under excavation, and the Tokoro Chashi Minamione site.Trial excavations were carried out in the areas to be designated in order to find out the distribution of the sites. Two pit burials of Okhotsk culture were found in 2001, one in April and other in October. As these pit burials correspond chronologically to the settlement at the Tokoro Chashi site Okhotsk locality, which is currently being investigated by the University of Tokyo, the excavations have shed light on the spatial relationship between the settlement and graveyard of Okhotsk culture.The results of these investigations have been compiled into a research report, so see the report for details. There still remains a large variety of data to be processed and analyzed. A proposal to the National Historical Site Presentation Project has been made in this research report.
