项目摘要

いわゆる「カルト」問題に代表される現代日本における(新)宗教と社会のコンフリクトの高まりやその背景について、近代日本における新宗教と社会の関係の歴史というより広い文脈のなかでその特徴を捉えようと試みた。その方法としては、これまで社会問題化した宗教についてそれぞれどのような点が問題視されたのか、いわばコンフリクトの内容を抽出し、それらの主要なパターンについて現代とそれ以前を比較するというやり方をとった。その結果、近代以降の新宗教と社会のコンフリクトのパターンにおいてある程度時代ごとの特徴(持続と変化)がみられることがわかった。幕末・維新期に台頭した新宗教については、信仰治療に代表される呪術性、信者の多額の献金、性的ないかがわしさといった疑惑がとくに問題とされた。その後大正期になると、それらに加えて社会変革を訴える政治的主張や行動が問題視されるようになる。これらに対して、近年の「カルト」問題では、これまでのパターンをある程度引継ぎながらも、家族員をめぐる家族と教団の争奪、教団による信者の精神操作のありかた、教団内での信者の生活のありかた(酷使や人権抑圧)などが新たにクローズアップされてきたことがわかった。そしてこうした変化の背景を、新宗教の側の性格変化(若者をターゲットとしたリクルート戦略、外社会に対する教団の閉隔性の高さ、教団における強い家父長的権威主義など)および社会の規範意識の変化(人権概念の拡大、反カルト運動の組織化、欧米の「カルト」問題の影響など)と開連づけて検討した。
