日本の新宗教の救済思想は「生命主義」という概念で大きく括られると考えられるが、それは更に「大生命の思想」と、「霊界思想」の二類型に分けることができる。今回は後者の「霊界思想」に焦点をあわせて、その思想の構造およびそのヴァリエーションの解明、それから導きだされる行為規範の特徴(とりわけそこで重視される霊供養のさまざまなありかた)、それらの社会的意義や背景について研究した。日本の新宗教史のなかで、ある程度体系だった「霊界思想」がうちだされてくるのは大正時代あたりからである。今回は、その頃発生した代表的団体で、「霊界思想」やそれにもとずく霊供養実践を強調するもの、しかもその後の新宗教に及ぼした思想的な影響力の大きいものとして、大本、霊友會、福田海を中心にとりあげ、それぞれの思想、霊供養実践の特徴をあきらかにし、また相互の比較を試みた。大本の霊界観では、霊界は高次元の神霊から動物霊や死霊まで含んでいて、それらが個々人の運命だけでなく、世のなか全体の運命に係わっているとみなされており、「霊界思想」が世直しの思想と結びつく所に特徴がある。霊友會の場合、霊界と現界のつながりのなかで特に先祖と子孫の関係が重視され、独自の戒名と法華経の読誦による先祖供養が強調された。福田海も先祖供養を重視したが、それとならんで無縁の霊や動物霊などの祭祀、供養の必要性も力説した。またその際、特に墓のありかた(墓相)や墓の祭祀の重要性が強調された。なお、研究にあたっては、関連教団やその関係者からの聴取調査と関連資料(文献)の収集に力を入れた。そのため研究費の多くを調査旅費及び設備備品(文献資料)に充当した。
