本年度は主として前年に行った現地調査で収集した資料の取りまとめと、データベース化を中心に作業を行い、あわせて追加的な文献の収集と整理を実施した。この結果、調査対象地・ママサ地方(インドネシア・南スラウェシ州)における観光化の編年作業は終了し、慣習家屋の画像もすでにデータベース化している。本研究の主たるテーマは、ママサ地方における観光化の影響、ことに意匠など慣習家屋の表現に与える影響を明らかにし、あわせて近代化にともなう社会構造の変化との関係を明らかにすることであった。同時に同じ文化圏に属し、より観光化が進展しているサダン・トラジャ地方の観光化の過程を再定式化することも、副次的な目的である。この間の研究で、当初の研究テーマはほぼ明らかにすることができた。ママサ地方では現在でも暗黙に存続する階級構造と、バヌアと呼ばれる慣習家屋の各カテゴリーが厳密に対応している。しかし慣習家屋のカテゴリーが構造、意匠など建築的要素によるという従来の研究結果に対し、むしろカテゴリーは所有者の出身階級や慣習的権利に依存して決まる社会的存在であることを明らかにできたのは、本研究の成果といえよう。また慣習家屋の呼称など、従来の研究に見られた若干の誤謬も訂正することができた。これらの誤謬は同文化圏であるサダン・トラジャの事例をそのまま適用したところから生じている。近代化にともなって、階級と慣習家屋のカテゴリーとの対応を越える、社会的侵犯の事例も散見されるようになった。しかしこれら社会的侵犯は観光客に対する文化の展示という枠組みを偽装して行われ、地域住民も同様の枠組みで暗黙に容認する。調査地域において、観光化は社会を不安定化させる要因としてより、近代化によって生じた不安定要因を心理的、社会的に安定化させる要素として機能している。これは観光の社会的機能を考える上で、従来見られなかった示唆といえよう。
