平成11年度に行われた研究の結果、「女性」では、従来からの「女性性」を表現する言葉が多く挙がる一方で、「心・芯は強い」という従来には見られなかった女性性の概念が抽出された。また「男性」では、「たくましい」「強い」「頼りになる」等の、従来の「男性性」と一致した表現となっていた。しかし「女性」とは反対に「気が弱い」等の精神的な弱さを挙げた者も多く、これらの傾向は20代の対象者に強く見られた。これらを元に、平成12年度は、「看護」との関連性に焦点を当て調査した。分析した結果では、「看護」に対し、「優しい」「大変・しんどい」「強い・強い精神力」という項目が上位を占めた。さらに、「女性・女性中心の仕事」という項目も、対象者の10%が挙げていた。また、看護に対するイメージと「女性性」、「男性性」としてあげられた項目において、共通する言葉を分析したところ、「女性性」との共通の方が有意に高いことが確認できた。以上の結果から、一般の人々が抱いている「看護」に対するイメージは、従来の「女性」をイメージする「優しい」等と、新しい「女性」を表す「強い」というイメージの両方を持ち合わせていることが明確となった。看護教育を考える上で、「看護」と「女性性」というものが強く結びついていることを理解し、看護者は看護に対する伝統的な女性的役割である「やさしい」だけでなく、「頼りになる」「強い」という看護の側面も、社会的に要求されていることを事実として受け止めなければならない。以上の結果をもとに、現在論文を作成中である。
