Purpose of this study is to develop the methods to apply the EOG (electro-oculogram) measures for psychophysiology of sleepiness and fatigue concerning safety and comfort in industrial workers. Measurements of EOG are relatively easily applicable for human performing various tasks. Components of EOG including eye-blinking, saccades, slow eye movements (SEM) may provide various information about fatigue and other psychophysiological states of human. In the research 1 of this project, experimental examination was performed to clarify the usage of EOGs as a measure for sleepiness. EOG, overt behavior and subjective reports were recorded in relatively static and monotonous situation of "hearing a lecture". In the results of correlation analyses, the SEM was useful to detect the strong level of sleepiness or "dozen-off'. Eye-blink- durations showed positive correlation to the level of subjective sleepiness. In the next research (research 2), EOG indices were applied to long-haul overnight tru … More ck driving. EOG, EEG (electroencephalogram), ECG (electrocardiogram), video-images (forward view and behavior of the driver), distance from the car ahead (measured by infrared instruments) were recorded. Increase of eye-blink-duration was observed in the time of midnight to early morning, accompanied by the increase in subjective sleepiness and subsidiary behavior, and followed by spontaneous break or nap in many cases. Traffic condition was the main factor which affects the frequencies in eye-blinking and saccades. However, strong sleepiness was related to a remarkable decrease in the frequencies of eye-blinking and saccades when the traffic condition was monotonous. Results indicate that the combination of observation of duration and frequencies in eye-blinking, horizontal-EOG, and traffic conditions, subsidiary behavior is useful to evaluate the driver's sleepiness. In the research 3, methods and tools developed in these researches were applied to a professional truck-driver in permanent night work. Results showed enhancement of sleepiness during the succession of night work. Less
