今年度は、まず林語堂関連資料の収集に力を入れ、China Critic、H・エリスの「わが人生」などを入手した。「生活の芸術」という概念については、参考となるH・エリス、W・モリス、O・ワイルド、A・モーロワ、M・フーコーの関連資料の検討から、これが、文学,思想はもちろん、美学、倫理学、文化人類学、精神分析を含む心理学、さらには、経済学、社会学、政治学、工学にまでわたる問題であることが判明してきた。本研究の出発点においた周作人の「生活の芸術」に限って、その主なポイントをあげると、1.五四時期にはトルストイアンとして有名だった周作人が、1920年代半ばになると、トルストイの反芸術至上主義的著作「芸術とは何か」を批判するエリスの見解を受け入れていった。2.ワイルドに対する周作人の態度は両義的で、五四時期のみならず20年代半ばにおいても批判的にとらえている一方、結局はワイルドの「生活の芸術化」の中国型とでもいえるような態度へと変遷していった。3.周作人のいう「生活の芸術」は、生活を彩る茶の作法や飲酒の工夫、工芸品などによる日常生活の装飾のことだけを指すのでなく、また、彼自身によって、「さらなる快楽のための節制」と定式化されているが、それは、単に欲望を処理する精神的技術でもない。それは、所謂「倫理の自然化」を志向するものであって、基本的には、性善説的立場だが、同時に、所謂「道義の事功化」が要求される一種の政治(思想)的立場である。4.「生活の芸術」という発想に彼がいたるにあたって、フレイザー、柳田国男をはじめとする文化人類学、民俗学の知見が重要な作用を果たしたと考えられる。習俗や風習に、広義の「芸術」を見出すのは、柳田国男だけではないので、周作人が日本留学中からfolkloreに強い関心をもっていたことを改めて重視しなければならない。
