项目摘要

科学研究費補助金の最終年度である今年度は、前年度に行われたアフリカ・カメルーン現地調査で得られた資料やデータの整理を行うとともに、主として文献調査を行った。特に、アフリカのろう教育史に関する豊富な資料を所蔵する、アメリカ合衆国のギャローデット大学に約2ヶ月間滞在し、文献の閲覧と収集を行った。さらに、この大学の研究者や関連する人物と連絡を取り、研究情報の交換やインタビューを行った。その結果、西・中部アフリカ一帯において、ろう者たち自身が運営する世界最大級の国際的なろう教育事業が存在していたことが明らかになった。そして、カメルーンにおける外来手話導入の歴史は、このろう者たちによる自律的な教育・文化事業の一端として理解されるべきであることが分かった。しばしば研究者によって言及される「大言語による少数言語の駆逐」という見方では、外来手話言語がアフリカ大陸に急速に伝播した歴史や、今日における受容のされ方を理解することはできないことも分かった。これらの実態をふまえ、今後ともろう者の価値観と歴史観にまで掘り下げた、さらなる文化人類学的な現地調査・研究が重要であることが明らかになった。これらの成果については、すでに複数の雑誌等において論考を発表し、また二度の学会発表として公開されている。さらに、成果の一部は学術雑誌に投稿中であり、2004年度に開催される複数の学会において、発表が受理されている。
