申請者は「越境するタイ北部の雲南系ムスリムをめぐる民族間関係の分析」というテーマのもとに、雲南系ムスリムの移動にともなう多層的な民族間関係に焦点を当て、移住先で彼らがどのようにコミュニティを形成していくのかという点を明らかにするために研究をおこなってきた。研究成果は、つぎの3点にまとめられる。1)雲南系ムスリムの移住にともなう周辺民族との民族間関係:雲南系ムスリムは、北タイに移住後、周辺民族である山岳民族、平地タイ人、雲南系、潮州系のタイ華人やインド・パキスタン系ムスリムといった異民族と、多面的な社会関係をつくりあげてきた。山岳民族とは交易によって、インド・パキスタン系ムスリムと宗教を通じて、相互の往来があり、一部には雲南系ムスリムとの通婚もみられる。とりわけ、雲南系漢族とは、雲南からの移住時期が重なり、タイに定着した現在では、雲南系華人として結合し、同郷会館をつくり、タイにおける華人の役割を果たしはじめている。2)雲南系ムスリムの民族内関係:雲南系ムスリムは北タイに移住後、宗教を通じて、民族集団内におけるさまざまな社会関係をむすんできた。とりわけ、雲南系ムスリムどうしの婚姻が世代を越えて維持されことや、北タイ各地における雲南系ムスリムによるモスクの建設や、その他の宗教活動における共有などに特徴がみられる。こうした雲南系ムスリム間における社会関係の構築は、雲南系ムスリムのコミュニティが地域的にしだいに形成されていく過程を示すものである。3)国境をこえた雲南系ムスリムの移動:雲南系ムスリム内における社会関係は、タイ国内にとどまらず中国の雲南ムスリムとの間でも展開しつつある。こうした傾向は1990年代に入り活発化し、彼らは親族や知人をつうじた故郷訪問をおこなうばかりではなく、雲南におけるモスクの建設などといった宗教施設の復興も経済的に支援している。また、チェンマイでは、中国の雲南ムスリムと北タイの雲南系ムスリムが合同でメッカ巡礼を行われ始めている。以上の事例は、近年、雲南系ムスリムを中心に、中国ムスリムとの国境をこえた連携がしだいに強まっていることを表している。
