本研究が具体的課題としたのは、庚申塔の石塔形態の広域的調査とその変遷・伝播過程を基にした物質文化の流通動態の復元である。石造遺物の形態は流行的性格が強く、関東では江戸を中心として郊外に向け伝播する傾向が指摘されてきた。従って本研究では、石造遺物の多様な流通像をありのまま捉えつつ、立体的な流通系を復元するため、調査地域を交通手段で分けることとし、利根川・荒川などにおける河川交通の拠点および街道沿いの村落を対象に資料収集を実施した。前年度に引き続き平成14年度も実地踏査を含む基礎データ収集作業とその分析を重点に研究活動を行った。実地踏査の主要調査対象は、埼玉県内陸部の都幾川村、飯能市、所沢市、伊勢崎市周辺である。本年度の実地調査の一部及び、昨年度の収集データを基に庚申塔の形態変遷について、数量的分析を試みた結果は、平成14年9月発行の『歴史地理学』44巻4号において発表した。具体的な成果としては、江戸を中心とした石塔の流行型式が特に利根川・荒川沿岸地域において早期に普及する過程が認められ、水運の発達と共に庚申塔が伝播した可能性が明らかとなった。加えて石塔型式の普及過程をより実証性の高い手法から把握する試みとして、型式学的特徴に対する統計学的な処理を行い、平成14年6月29日に行われた三田史学会大会(会場:東京・慶應義塾大学)において「近世庚申塔にみる形態の規格性-江戸近郊における物質文化交流の復元にむけて-」と題して口頭発表を行った。さらに東京都23区内と郊外地域との結びつきを詳細に把握するため、旧街道を基軸として都区内データを微細な地域的区分から分析を行う作業を試みた。その結果については平成15年5月24・25日に行われる第69回日本考古学協会総会(会場:東京・日本大学)において、口頭発表を予定している。以上、庚申塔の伝播の過程を考古学的な立場から時空間的に跡づける具体的作業を行うことによって、近世における物質文化の流通や文化(情報)普及のあり方を実証的に把握するための先駆的な手法の開発、および有効な分析成果を得ることができた。
