旧石器時代の行動領域分析を行うために、主に石刃製の大形刺突具の石材を関東地方全体にわたって検討した。分析の方法は、2段階にわたっている。まず、関東地方北部から東北地方南部にかけての石器石材の産地の現地踏査を詳細に行った。前年度は栃木県北部の高原山周辺地域と会津盆地周縁地域で重要な石材産地を発見したが、今年度は新潟地域の珪質頁岩の調査を詳細に行った。その結果、従来判然としなかった信濃川流域の珪質頁岩の産地が判明した。これにより関東地方から東北地方南部の石器石材環境に関する基礎データが整備された。次に、後期旧石器時代初頭から後半期にかけて、9つの細分時期の資料を関東地方全体にわたって抽出し、その石刃石器に利用されている石材を調査した。関東地方全体の資料を対象としたが、主に東部関東の資料を中心に検討した。その石材を現地踏査による石材と照合して、主たる狩猟具を調達するための移動領域の範囲を検討した。その結果以下のような移動領域が判明した。東部関東に遺跡を残した集団の移動領域は、後期旧石器時代初頭には南北100キロメートル程度の比較的狭い範囲の往還領域が抽出された。具体的には、房総半島南部から宇都宮丘陵周辺を南北方向に往還移動していた。石刃生産が顕著に発達するIX層中部移行の時期になると、特定石材産地を結節するV字形の移動領域が成立している。具体的には利根川上流の三国山地と高原山周辺を両極端の石材産地に配置し、その中間に下総地域や下野地域を挟み込んだ領域が成立している。西武関東も特定石材産地を2〜3箇所結節した回廊領域が成立している。この回廊領域は、後期旧石器時代前半期を通じて維持され最終氷期まで継続している。この回廊領域が崩壊して新たな領域配置が見られるのが、後半期の両面体調整石器群の発生期である。この時期に、社会的な集団間の再編成が起きていると推定された。
