Method:We connected between the personal computer at our institute and the cooperator's computer with ISDN (high speed public telephone circuit in Japan). First year, we estimated the possibility of teleradiology with low compressed imaging data. MRI imaging data of 30 cases were obtained at cooperator's institute. The data were compressed in 75 % and stored in the cooperator's personal computer. We got the data via ISDN, measured the transmission time and examined the diagnostic accuracy at reading of the images. As a result of this study, transmission time was too long, so we tried high compressed imaging data next year. We used the DICOM imaging data of our institute. These data were translate to JPEG images and compressed in 30 %. Then we measured the transmission time of MR imaging data of 15 cases (head and spine), which were sent to cooperator's computer, and examined the diagnostic accuracy of such high compressed imaging data.Result:With low compression rate, mean transmission time per one case was 30 minutes and 22 seconds. In this study, all lesions were detected in the reading of the images. On the other hand, with high compression rate, transmission time per one case was 7 minutes and 15 seconds. Tiny lesions might be missed in the reading of the images, however there were no clinical problems.Discussion:Our study clarified the practical use of ISDN and personal computers in teleradiology. But now , we can use faster circuit such as ADSL for teleradiology. We would like to continue to exam the efficacy of teleradiology with faster public circuit than ISDN.
