The purpose of this study is to clarify the altitudinal change in climate of Yakushima Island based on the observed data. The relationship between the vertical structure of free atmosphere at Kagoshima and the altitudinal change in temperature and relative humidity at Yakushima Island are mainly analyzed. The inversion of temperature between Yodogou (1360m) and Kuromi-dake mountain (1800m) and the large decrease of relative humidity from Yodogou to Kuromi-dake mountain often occur under the control of traveling anticyclone on a synoptic condition. In this case, the inversion layer tends to develop between 1000m and 1500m in the free atmosphere of Kagoshima. The changes of temperature and relative humidity around the top of mountain are similar to those of the free atmosphere. On the contrary, the changes of temperature and relative humidity at Yodogou do not correspond to those of the free atmosphere. This altitudinal difference of climatic relationship between mountain slope and free atmosphere depend on the difference of vegetation.Considering these results, the altitudinal difference of climate in Yakushima Island is thought to be caused by the interaction between the vertical structure of free air and the altitudinal difference of vegetation.
