A Theoretical and Empirical Study of the Relationship among Culture, Interaction and Language

Four closed workshops were held at Japan Women's University 2001 through 2002 to have a discussion on this research project aiong investigators and cooperative researches from abroad. In 2001, we have two open workshops at the Japanese Association of Sociolinguistic Science Conferences and we invited two researchers in the field of anthropological linguistics, Dr. Jane Hill from University of Arizona and Dr. Asif Agha from University of Pennsylvania, to the workshop and had a fruitful outcome for the discussion on the form and grammar in interaction based on the notion of linguistic ideology. As the main outcome of this project, the book, Culture, Interaction, and Language eds. by Kuniyoshi Kataoka and Sachiko Ide was published by Hitsuji Shobo in 2002.Each investigator has made progress in his/her research on linguistic phenomena of East Asian languages to claim that they cannot be explained from the theoretical framework by western languages. The relationship among language, interaction and culture was discussed based on the collected data to explain these linguistic phenomena. The opinions were exchanged at the workshops and the suggestions for further studies were suggested. Each investigator reflected the discussion with the members of this research project into his or her own paper on the book, Culture, Interaction, and Language eds. by Kuniyoshi Kataoka and Sachiko Ide.
