(1)全国科学博物館協議会加盟館及びその他の科学系博物館が整備を進めている自然史標本データベースの開発・公開状況、対象の設定、内容を検討した。その結果、分類用語、類縁関係など内容に関する基礎的な知識を習得していることを前提とし、一般の利用を想定していないものが大半であることが明らかになった。現在開発・公開されている自然史標本データベースを一般の利用者が使いこなせるようにするには、内容に関する基礎的な知識の提供が必要であるが、教育的な配慮を行い情報教育用ソフトウェアとして応用することが可能である。(2)植物標本を基礎にした博物館の自然史標本データベースの開発・公開状況に対する精査の結果、(1)博物館の自然史標本データベースは多くの分野の分類学の研究者に公開し、検討の機会を増やすことで最新の学術的な知見を反映させて、資料の信頼性を維持している、(2)反面、博物館が公開している自然史標本データベースについても信頼度は高いが、最新の知見を反映できていない場合があることが明らかになり、学習プログラムに反映させた。(3)国立科学博物館で開発した自然史標本データベースと学校のカリキュラムの関連を検討し、(1)情報モラルの育成、(2)標本データベース構成理解促進、(3)実物に比して省略された情報の理解、(4)貸し出し標本の手法の応用、(5)学習者の発達段階に配慮し、標本に触れながらの情報を取り出す過程の追体験、に配慮した学習プログラム構成とした。(4)科学系博物館および研究協力校で児童に対し、開発した学習プログラムを試行・記録し、学習効果を評価した。学習プログラム実施前の児童の「データベース」に対する理解は高くなかった。本研究で開発した学習プログラム「データベースの仕組みに関するワークショップ」、「実物標本を活用した実習」を実施した結果、標本データベースの意義、作られ方、情報の科学的な理解が深まることが確認された。
