当初予定していたネパールでの調査は,現地の政情が不安定で,調査予定地の訪問が危険な状態が継続しているため,現地調査を伴わない研究体制をとった。このため,ネパールにおける森林資源管理に関しては,既存文献レビューならびにこれまでのデータの解析を行い,さらに,日本のアイヌ民族による日本(北海道)とカナダの先住民族の森林利用と管理に関する文献レビュー・野外調査を行い,ネパール・ヒマラヤとの比較検討を行った。その結果,日本やカナダの先住民族の森林利用・管理手法が,ネパールでの持続的な森林資源の開発と利用に有効であることが明らかとなった。すなわち,現在までのところ,ネパール・ヒマラヤにおいては,森林は木材利用に偏重しているが,日本やカナダの先住民族の間で見られる,木材以外のさまざまな形態の利用が重要であることが明らかになった。アイヌ民族の森林資源の保全・利用については,北海道各地のアイヌ民族から聞き取り調査を行い,関連文献や情報を集め,分析を行った。ここでは,森林資源を多様に利用してきたことがわかった。また,カナダではオタワ周辺の先住民族から聞き取り調査を行い,日本のアイヌ同様に,森林資源を多様に利用してきていることがわかった。すなわち,彼らは,森林から産まれる多様な「物」に関して,豊富な知識を有しており,経験的に,それらの利用・保全のための手法を身につけていることがわかった。このことから,これらの先住民にとっては,森林資源を保全し,その結果,生物多様性を保全してゆくためには,非木材部分の多様な活用を森林管理のメインストリームにしてゆくことが重要視されていることが理解できた。今後は,ネパールにおけるガイドライン作成が必要だと言える。
