幼児やおとなは,目標指向性や意図性といった心理的な属性を,人間だけでなく他の動物にも付与する。このような認識の初期発達は,アニミズムや動物カテゴリ形成,さらに心の理論研究の観点からも注目されている。本年度の研究では,このような観点から,2歳児を対象とした模倣課題による実験を通じて,動物の行為の目標指向性に関する推論の初期の様相について調べた。実験は,大学内の乳幼児用実験室において,保護者の同意のもとでおこなわれた。被験児には,テレビ画面上で,動物-今回はチンパンジー-が目標指向的に対象操作をする映像が呈示された。その後,同じ対象が被験児に手渡され,被験児がその対象をいかに操作するかが評価された。映像には2種類あり,ひとつはチンパンジーが,たとえば玩具をパーツに分解するというような目標操作に成功するもの,もうひとつは,同様の目標操作に失敗するものであった。映像の呈示,制御には補助金によって購入したノート型PCを用いた。同様の手続きを用いた先行研究からは,人間が同様の操作を演じて見せた場合,1歳半児において,目標操作に失敗する事象を見たあとであっても,それに成功する事象を見たときと同様に目標操作の再生が起こることが知られている。そしてこれは,幼児が,直接目撃していない演者の行為の目標を推論したことの証左であると考えられている。今回の実験の結果,チンパンジーが対象操作に失敗する事象を目撃した被験児は,チンパンジーが同様の対象操作に成功する事象を目撃した被験児と同じ水準で,目標操作を再生することが示唆された。この結果は,2歳児が,動物の行為に人間の行為と同様に目標指向性を付与していることを意味すると考えられる。今後,このような推論の発達についてより詳細に知るために,より年少の被験児を対象にした調査をおこなうほか,チンパンジー以外の動物の行為に関する推論について問題にする必要がある。
