19世紀フランス史研究において、学校・教育は、そのヘゲモニーを競う国家と教会の闘争の舞台として描かれ、共和国的市民育成を目指す国家、もしくは教育を通じて勢力の回復をねらう教会が用いたイデオロギー装置として論じられてきた。しかし、従来の研究では、実際の社会において国家と教会のヘゲモニー闘争がどのように展開していたのか、政治レベルの決定が学校のあり方にどのような変更を迫ったのか、学校関係者や生徒の両親の要求は公教育制度の発展に影響を与えていたのか、といった具体的な学校・地域社会・国家の相互関係が不明瞭なままであった。そこで、本研究は、フランス第二の都市リヨンを事例に、地域社会における私立中等学校の具体的な役割・機能とその変化の解明を目的に進められた。その成果の一部は、論文「19世紀フランスにおける世俗私立中等学校-リヨンの事例から」として結実し、近日中に『史学雑誌』に掲載される予定である。本論文の主眼は、フランス教育史を検討する際に、有効な枠組みとして設定されてきた二つのテーゼの再検討を促すことにある。第一に、国家と教会の対立を公立学校と私立学校の対立に還元する見方、第二に、エリートのための中等教育と民衆のための初等教育という対立図式、を教育現場の実態から再考したのである。その結果、まず、国家でもなく教会でもない第三の教育セクター世俗私立中等学校が19世紀を通じてフランス全土に広範に存在し、これらの学校は、公教育では満たしきれない地域社会や個人の要求に迅速かつ柔軟に応えつつ独自の教育実践を展開していた点を明らかにした。そして、初等教育と中等教育の分化が内実を伴って確立するのは世紀末でしかなかった事実も指摘できた。世俗私立中等学校は中等学校として認可されていたが、その大半は、実は、フランス語を中心に実学教育を施す初等教育コースと古典語をプログラムの中心に据える中等教育コースの二つの課程を備える混合施設だったのである。
