英国18世紀のバラッド編集(特にトマス・パーシーの『英国古謡拾遺集』)と同時期のシェイクスピア作品編集との関係性を学問的編集という観点から考察してきた。18世紀の半ばに、シェイクスピア編集において、ルイス・セオボルドが支持する「原著者の意図を重視する方針」が、アレクサンダー・ポープらの「美的方針」にとってかわり、編集者や読者ではなく、原著者の意図を重じようとする傾向が起こりはじめ、その傾向はフレッドソン・バウアーやウォルター・グレッグといった20世紀の新書誌学派にまで及ぶ大きな潮流を形成している。パーシーも、この編集上の変化に対応して、「美的方針」から「原著者の意図を重視する方針」へと態度を変えて、『拾遺集』を編集しなおしている。このことに関しては、「先駆者からの降格-Reliques1794年版の出版の背景」という題目で2003年5月に行われた日本英文学会の研究発表で披露した。この編集上の変化は、パーシーが『拾遺集』に収めるべきバラッドに修正を加えたこととも関係する。この修正は、一見すると原著者を無視しているように思えるが、実はバラッドの原著者の意図を復興する目的でなされたものなのである。パーシーは「美的方針」からはなれて「原著者を重視する方針」に基づく学問的編集を行い、上記の学問的編集の系譜を自らも受け継ぎ、その発展にバラッド編集の面で貢献したのである。以上の内容がまとめられた論文が、「原著者の追跡-トマス・パーシーの編集方針」というタイトルの下、学会誌『イギリス・ロマン派研究』第28号(2004年)の1-13ページに掲載される予定である。
