项目摘要

本年度は空海思想における言語と真理との関係についての諸論文を発表した。空海は顕教と密教との差異を提示した『弁顕密二教論』において、真理そのものとされる「法身」と「説法」という具体的活動は関わらないとされている従来の仏教における正統的な理解に対立するように、「法身が直接に説法する(法身説法)」と主張しており、その動機を、時代背景の中で考察するものである。空海と同時代の仏教界においては、三論宗と法相宗が勢力を争っており、両宗の間で議論となっていた「空有論諍」の中で、「言語の断と心の滅」(言語道断心行処滅・心言路絶)というトピックが特に注目を集めていたことから、その両宗が「真理と言語は関わらない」と位置づけることに対して、空海は「法身(真理そのもの)が説法する」と主張したと論じ、『南都佛教』に発表した。同様に、この空海の真理と言語とが関わりあうという思考の類似は、空海の知識背景となっていた中国六朝期の欧陽建の『言尽意論』(『芸文類聚』所収)にも見出され、その関係を考察した。中国においても「真理は言葉で表しえない」という考え方は広く認められており、六朝期には『易』繋辞伝の「書不尽意、言不尽意」および『荘子』外物篇に見られる「筌・蹄」の表現を用いて、「得意忘言」説として広く受けいれられていた。その中で、『言尽意論』は、「言」と「意(真理)」が対応しうると主張する点で特異な著作であり、空海の思想の前駆形態として関係を考察し、二〇〇四年七月に駒澤大学で行なわれた日本印度学仏教学会において発表した。その要訳は『印度学仏教学研究』において発表する。また、その発表に先だって、同様の問題を二〇〇四年四月にアメリカ合衆国ニュージャージー州シートンホール大学で英文で一般的な問題としてその内容を発表し、その成果を英文で発表した。
