项目摘要

昨年度に引き続き、今年度も、文学作品に対する著作権のあり方の変遷と文学者の自らの作品に対する権利意識の移り変わり、文学者の果たすべき社会的役割についての意識の変遷と文学斎場の発達との関連についての研究を行った。この研究の成果は5つの書籍や研究誌において発表し、平成16年5月23日には、大阪大学で開催された日本英文学会の全国大会での口頭発表も行った。上述の研究のために必要な一次資料と批評書を閲覧・収集するために7月29日から8月10日の13日間、イギリスの大英図書館、英国上院公文書館、フランス、ドイツの国立図書館で文献調査を行った。著作権法の変遷と文筆家の意識の変遷の関係については、18世紀末から19世紀にかけての英国における著作権法改定とそ為に両けてワーズワースやサウジーをはじめとする文人たちが社会や国会に対して行った働きかけとその主張の内容を整理した。彼らとは異なる著作権の意識を持っていた同時代の文人コールリッジと彼らとの見解を比較、彼らの著作権の意識の違いは彼らの芸術観や文人の社会における役割についての見解の違いによるものであることを指摘した論文は、日本英文学会第27回新人賞の佳作に選ばれた。文学者の社会的意識と役割の変遷について考察するために、ジャーナリズムやいわゆるポピュラー・カルチャーに属する出版物と文筆家の関係に着目して研究を行った。ジャーナリズムに関わった文人は多いが、彼らの多くは、その広範で直接的な影響力を十分認識してその仕事に取り組んでいたことを確認した。特にフランス革命の前後には文筆のもつ社会的影響力は強く認識されており、新聞をあらゆる階層の人々の啓蒙に貢献するものと考えた文人の活動の一例として、コールリッジが1797年末からの数年間に『モーニング・ポスト』紙に寄稿した政治詩にこめられた彼の政治的メッセージや姿勢の一貫性について考察した。また、1820年代から30年代に流行したギフト・ブックに寄稿する機会が、コールリッジの後期の詩心のよみがえりに与えた影響を考察した論文は、イギリスのコールリッジ学会の機関誌に採用され2005年春号に収録予定である。
