项目摘要

本年度は、仏教(主に日本における真言宗の密教)記号論の内的な論理(記号の哲学)と諸実践を綜合的に解明する課題であった。特に注目したのは、密教記号の構造、密教的意味の体系、密教救済論の記号性、密教の心身論、密教的エピステーメーの伝達方法、そして近現代日本文化アイデンティティーへの密教記号論の影響、というテーマであった。密教記号は真言陀羅尼という「表現」の分析によって解明した。密教的意味の体系は字相・字義や四重秘釈という複数意味レベルのシステムの分析によって明らかにした。その結果、密教の救済論は強い記号論的な側面をもつということが分った。それは、密教における救済(即身成仏または順次往生)は主として特定の記号(真言陀羅尼、曼茶羅など)の作用・操作によって得られるものである。救済とは瞑想などの儀礼によって心身の構造の変化に伴って起こるものだと主張されている。そのため、唯識思想を中心とした密教の心身論を検討した。以上のような密教的エピステーメーの諸要素の伝達方法(僧侶の教育課程、灌頂儀礼など)を描いてみた。最後に、密教記号論が及ぼした近現代日本文化アイデンティティーへの影響を再検討した。方法論としては、西洋の記号論を勝手に当てはめるのではなく、反対に、U. エーコなどの解釈学的記号論を知的道具として、様々な密教のテキストが独自に展開する記号論的なアイデアを紹介し解明する、という方法であった。真言宗の資料の他に、天台、曹洞、浄土や浄土真宗、神道なども検討した。研究業績の中心的な一部は。私が開催責任者の一員で、14年6月にサンマリーノ共和国、サンマリーノ大学国際記号論研究センターで行われた「タントラと神秘主義のシンポリズム」についての国際シンポジウムで発表した。全体的な業績は15年5月までに英語でインターネットで公開すると共に、それらを膨らましながら校正し書物にするつもりである。
