日本語の音韻体系では,伝統的に子音と母音の二つの分節(CV)からなる拍(mora)が言語処理の基本単位と考えられていたが、スピーチエラーの解析やメタ言語的データからの知見であり、実験心理学的アプローチはない。そこで本研究では日本語の実時間発話における拍の役割を、プライミングの手続きを使って検討した。およそ100名の被験者を対象に実験を行った。潜在プライミングでは,発語反応ターゲットとなる単語の音韻を概念から生成することが必要となる言語連想課題などで,ターゲット単語群に音韻的重複プライムのある実験条件と,重複のない統制条件を設定し,反応潜時を条件間比較する。その結果、語頭分節のプライミングでは効果が認められなかった(CVC)。また、母音の前に半母音を付加した刺激を使っても効果が認められなかった(CjV)。しかし、母音をプライムに付加することによって始めて効果が現れた(CVC)。また、母音の後に続く同じ音節の子音(CVC)は、1分節であるにもかかわらず単独で効果が認められた。これは語頭の子音とは異なって、単独でも拍になるためであると考えられる。これらの結果は、日本語話者の音韻的符合化のプロセスが拍単位であることを強く示すものであり、最初の子音が独立し、母音と最後の子音が強くまとまる音節構造をもつ欧米言語話者の結果と極めて対照的である。
