家業継承者のライフコースは、組織の雇用労働者として働く人々のライフコースよりも、経営体でもある家族や、地域社会・全体社会の変動から大きな影響を受けている。家業に従事し、家業を継承した人々の生活史を観察することで、個人のライフコース選択の場面で家族関係がどのように影響するのか、地域社会や全体社会の状況がどのように影響するのかといった、個人・家族・地域・社会の相互連関がみえてくる。これを経営体としての家族の視点から捉えれば、家族が経営体存続のために、家族メンバーや地域コミュニティをどのように資源として取り込み、全体社会の変動に適応していったのかという家族の存続戦略がみえてくる。本研究では、北関東を代表する商都、高崎市を事例地として、農業・商業・工業の家業継承者を対象に、彼らのライフコース選択、家族生活、家業経営、地域生活について面接調査を行った。対象の選定にあたっては、まず、高崎市家族協定研究協議会、高崎市青年商業者研究会、高崎女性経営者研究会、高崎青年会議所といった地域組織について、有識者のヒアリング調査と資料調査を行った。次いで、それらの組織の資料より、事例地において2世代以上にわたって家業を続けている世帯を特定し、代表的な事例を選定した。調査の結果、以下の知見が得られた。現在50代・60代の経営主が家業を継いだ高度経済成長期とそれ以降は、地域における同業者の組織化が、零細な家族経営の担い手を確保するのに有効だった。しかし、情報化・国際化がすすむ今日では、地域ネットワークに頼らず、より広域なネットワークをもつ個人経営者タイプの経営主が後継者を確保しやすい傾向が見られる。今日の自営業者の家族では、経営の合理化が図られるとともに、家族生活の世代間分離・家族関係の民主化がすすんでいる。しかしその根底には、伝統的な家族経営体の世代継承に対する根強い指向性が伺える。
