日本近代化過程における民衆統合のメカニズムは、「伝統」の擬制的創造の過程であり、その実質化をすすめてきたのは、明治以降に創設された近代学校による「伝統」の擬制化であった。早急な近代化をすすめる過程において、近代学校は、旧来からの民衆的慣習を巧みにアレンジすることで、進行する近代社会の進展に「自然性」を付与し、民衆による受容を促進してきたのである。しかし、「琉球処分」により、旧来からの支配機構を温存させたまま、日本近代社会に編入された沖縄にあっては、近代学校の果たす役割は「本土」のそれとは対照的なものであった。そこでは、急速な近代化を「自然」に装う戦略は選ばれず、近代学校は、極めて抑圧的に、新たな言語・文化・思想を注入する場として機能したのである。ただし、本研究においてその過程をいくつかの事例によって検証した結果、抑圧的な沖縄型近代学校も、一義的に「抑圧的」であったとは結論し得ないことが明らかになった。本研究が事例としたのは伊平屋島や伊計島のような離島地域であったが、沖縄の中心地から隔たる地域にあっては、むしろ積極的に近代学校を受容し本土化することで、沖縄圏内におけるそれまでの(離島的)後進性を払拭しようとする傾向も少なからず見られるのである。その際注目されるのは、沖縄においても展開された報徳会運動であった。沖縄における報徳会運動には、本土のそれとは異なる論理が貫かれていたと考えられるが、沖縄近代化過程の特異性は、沖縄において展開された報徳会運動の特異性を検証することでより明確になるという仮説を得ることができた。
