本研究、地域と学校の連携に関する史的研究〜昭和恐慌下における学校の社会的位相〜は、昭和恐慌を画期とした、学校の社会的位相を明らかにすることを目的とした。これまでの成果を結論的に言うならば、第一次大戦後において興隆した個人化された大衆社会は、都市部におけるそのさらなる進展の一方で、農村部においては反動的に、再び伝統的な共同体志向を醸造し、国家もまた恐慌下統治政策として、民衆を再度「地域」に眠り込ませる政策を展開した。その際、地域再編の論理を旧来型の「名望家支配」から、「中堅人物」の育成へとシフトさせながら、その実質を担保するため、学校の地域化、或いは、地域の学校化を推進してゆくことになった。その具体的展開は、農山漁村経済更正運動によってなされた。この農山漁村経済更正運動(農林省)は、内務省の主導する「国民更生運動」と相克関係にあったとは言え、その人的資源の開拓において地域と学校の連携を重視する点で、共通の認識を示していた。上述した連携は、二つの側面から推進された。一つは、社会教育の徹底(教化団体の指導・育成)による地域の教育化、或いは地域の学校化と呼ぶべき側面である。他方は、学校教育における郷土教育の導入や実業補修学校の整備・強化による、教育・学校の地域化、或いは生活化である。昭和戦前期における学校と地域の連携は、ある側面において現在もなお一つの「理想」とされ、戦後の「コミュニティづくり運動」 (自治省)を経て、いま、生涯学習体系の整備として、酷似した状況が展開されている。昭和恐慌期におけるひとづくり志向は、いわば「開かれた学校」を標傍する生涯学習体系下における学校の社会的位相と酷似しているのであり、価値の混迷する現代において、その価値の統合という発想を伏在させながら、ともに示唆深い歴史状況を示していると言えるのである。
